Poetry Description:
This poem
is a type of list poem and is usually unrhymed. It consists of lines that begin
with the words, ÒI am the one....Ó
Applications for History Class:
This poem examines a
historical period from the point of view of a person living during the time
period. Students can begin to relate to people of the time as they describe
life through the eyes of the person. It can be read to the class as a monologue
or be accompanied by an illustration of the historical person.
Directions:
Have the
student imagine that he is a person living during the time period being
studied. Have him write a poem from the point of view of the historical person beginning
with the words ÒI am the one.Ó It should tell about the feelings and thoughts
that the person has about himself.
Sample:
I am the one who always has to dig ditches.
I am the one who always has to plant the grain.
I am the one who gathers the harvest.
I am the one who has to haul the bags.
I am the one who has work all day.
I am the one who prays to the gods.
I am the one whose father died last spring.
